The Duhks Biography

The Duhks -- pronounced "ducks" -- came together by a combination of planning and happenstance. Founder Leonard Podolak set out to bring together a group of musicians who could create a new sound with traditional roots. Each of their distinct individual styles (blues, salsa, old-time, celtic, Scots-Metis) collides with surprising fluidity and forms something fresh and unexpected. Members include salsa-influenced drummer Scott Senior, soulful singer Jessica Havey, clawhammer banjoist Podolak (banjo), adaptable fiddler Tania Elizabeth (fiddle) and Celtic guitarist Jordan McConnell (guitar). The Duhks released their self-titled album on Sugar Hill Records in 2005. Bela Fleck served as producer. The disc features surprising, inventive musical turns on traditional tunes as hoary as "The Wagoner's Lad," playful original instrumentals in the Celtic and bluegrass traditions and interpretations of material from Leonard Cohen, Paul Brady and Sting.
