Lyle Lovett was born Nov. 1, 1957 in Klein, Texas, 25 miles north of Houston. He studied journalism and German at Texas A&M University. He also began writing songs, inspired by the area's talented songwriters like Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker and

Townes Van Zandt. Clark passed along Lovett's demo tape to Tony Brown in 1984, and Lovett signed to MCA Nashville/Curb in 1986. Known for his quirky songwriting, he reached the Top 10 with "Cowboy Man" but ultimately developed his audience by touring, exceptional press and word-of-mouth. Though he continued to release albums, Lovett found a second career in acting and married actress Julia Roberts in 1993. They divorced in 1995.

Lovett notched his fourth gold album and fourth Grammy with 1996's The Road to Ensenada. Two years later, he offered a two-CD set Step Inside This House, featuring songs written by his favorite Texas artists. He followed that acclaimed project with a live album, a film soundtrack, an anthology and an album of his songs culled from various films. A new studio album, My Baby Don't Tolerate, arrived on Lost Highway/Curb in 2003.
