Michelle Nixon & Drive Biography

Michelle Nixon was born in Virginia and grew up surrounded by music. She joined her first band at the age of 14, singing a variety of gospel and classic country music with different Virginia-based bands and inspired by Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris.

In 1990 and 1991, Nixon won the Virginia Folk Music Association's female vocalist award. In 1992, she was invited to cut some harmony vocals on bluegrass artist-songwriter Malcolm Pulley's project. This led to her love of bluegrass music. In the late '90s, she focused on writing songs, three of which appear on her 2003 album, It's My Turn. Tom T. Hall and wife Dixie also provided two cuts, "Harlan" and "Joan Henry."

A SPBGMA Award winner for her traditional vocals, Michelle Nixon & Drive released By Request in 2005 and What More Should I Say? in 2007. Nixon released a new album, A Place I Belong, in 2011.
