Tres Chicas Biography

Formed in Raleigh, N.C., in 1999, Tres Chicas features Caitlin Cary of Whiskeytown (violin, vocals), Lynn Blakey of Glory Fountain (guitar, vocals) and Tonya Lamm of Hazeldine (guitar, vocals). As close friends and fellow musicians, they often found themselves crossing paths in the city's music scene. One night during a rock show, Blakey cornered Cary and Lamm in the bar's bathroom until they agreed to form a band. After their first rehearsal at Cary's house, finding that their harmonies were nearly effortless, they decided to start booking gigs. A club owner dubbed them Tres Chicas in a newspaper advertisement, and the name stuck.

With an emphasis on soothing melodies and harmony singing, Tres Chicas' 2004 debut album Sweetwater includes original songs by the three women, along with some choice covers: George Jones' "Take the Devil Out of Me," Loretta Lynn's "Deep as Your Pocket" and Lucinda Williams' "Am I Too Blue." They also provided harmonies for several tracks on Alejandro Escovedo's album, A Man Under the Influence.
