Robert Rossi is an up and coming singer/songwriter whose music is steeped in the Americana Folk traditions of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Together with vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles, Robert has carved out his own unique sound utilizing his voice, guitar and harmonica. Each song he writes is a snapshot into the mind and life of the author, conveyed in a philosophical and sometimes whimsical poetic manner.
Regularly performing in New York City venues, Robert’s music is well received by audiences. Although it is different from writing music, he finds performance exhilarating. To him it reconciles the private and public aspects of his work. Quick to present new material, Robert constantly seeks to improve and to learn which ideas may be most exploratory. He treats his experience studiously and knows he is only growing better at becoming himself. If someone were to ask him what his goals as an artist were, he might reply simply to be true to himself. Anyone who really knows him, however, knows this reply is no simple matter.
Flown Away, Robert’s debut album, was released in January of 2012. Abstract and indulgent narratives dominate the album’s personal and often hidden themes. Social and political as well, the content of the album promises to be relevant for years to come. For Robert, Flown Away marks his transition from personal expression to artistic interpersonal communication. I believe the album will remain important in his breaking-through as an artist. Varied in their expression, each song on the album represents its own respective quality.
Robert’s second album, City Folk, was released at the historic venue The Bitter End in May 2013; it is now available through CD Baby and its affiliates. City Folk continues to show his progression as a songwriter. The title itself is an unabashed play on words: stylistically it describes Robert’s musical form and conceptually it speaks to those dwellers of the city around him, those in New York. Complex lyrics carry his growing sense for melody and harmony, creating music in its most pure form. In Robert’s own words, City Folk is an acoustic interpretation of the current New York City music scene. Its economy and organic qualities are an outright attempt to refine more simply the complex world surrounding him. City Folk is the first collection of songs written by Robert upon moving to New York City. And it is the first collection of songs to be produced by him as well.
As the topics in City Folk are very personal to Robert, it’s amazing that so much emotion and feeling is set forth and relatable to his audiences. It leaves his fans anxious to anticipate what is coming next. This truly is the sign of a song craftsman and entertainer.
