Brooks Epilogue Becomes Prologue

Garth Brooks performed as scheduled Wednesday night (July 4) in Philadelphia. But his spoken-word part, originally planned as an epilogue to a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by a cast of big-name actors, was used instead as a prologue to the presentation. Norman Lear, producer of the reading, wrote the part especially for Brooks. The tribute to the Declaration of Independence was part of Philadelphia’s Sunoco Welcome America! Celebration, carried live by ABC. Brooks also did a solo performance of “We Shall Be Free” accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. 07/06/01
