McEntire Finishes Out of the Running in CMA Voting

The recent Girls’ Night Out tour accounted for eight CMA nominations on Tuesday (Aug. 28) -- five for Sara Evans (seven counting her production credits), two for Jamie O’Neal and one for Martina McBride. But the headliner, Reba McEntire, was shut out. Her last CMA nomination came in 1998, for vocal event of the year (“If You See Him/If You See Her” with Brooks & Dunn), and her last win was in 1994, also for vocal event (“Does He Love You” with Linda Davis). A former CMA entertainer of the year, McEntire recently completed a successful six-month run on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun, and the Girls’ Night Out concerts drew critical praise. But her last country hit of any consequence, “I’ll Be,” went to No. 4 on Billboard’s country singles chart over a year ago. A greatest hits album and a TV sitcom on tap in the coming weeks will add to her high profile. 08/28/01
