Wynette’s Cause of Death Ruled “Natural Causes”

Tammy Wynette’s official cause of death in 1998 has been changed from undetermined to “natural causes,” The Associated Press reports. Nashville Medical Examiner Bruce Levy made the announcement Tuesday (Sept. 25), two years after ruling the cause of her death couldn’t be determined. The AP reports the change stems from new research into the drug Versed, which Wynette was taking for pain. One laboratory previously found traces of it in Wynette’s body. Now, Levy has had the samples tested two more times and no Versed was found. New research suggests that the drug would have been changed by exposure to embalming fluids. 09/25/01
