Messina, Nelson, Griggs Make Rockies Event a Success

Organizers are calling this year’s Country in the Rockies event a “huge success.” The eighth annual fundraiser for the T.J. Martell Foundation and the Frances Williams Preston Laboratories at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center wrapped up Saturday evening (Feb. 2) in Crested Butte, Colo., with a concert by Willie Nelson. Andy Griggs learned to ski while he was there. Songwriter Marv Green (“Amazed,” “Let’s Make Love”) went snowboarding. And Sherrie Austin and Billy Dean did some traveling by dog sled. Jo Dee Messina gave a concert Wednesday night (Jan. 30). Thursday evening(Jan. 31), country artists tended bar at three local clubs, raising over $200,000 for the cause. Griggs, a Louisiana State University fan, earned one donation by singing “Rocky Top,” fight song for rival University of Tennessee. 02/04/02
