Brad Paisley draws the plum title track on Sharp Dressed Men: A Tribute to ZZ Top. The album, due April 30 on RCA Records, is a collection of ZZ Top songs sung by country artists in tribute to the famous rock trio.
The group -– Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard -– was in Nashville during the recent Country Radio Seminar to tape an episode of CMT Crossroads. They were paired with Brooks & Dunn in a swap of country and rock influences. The show debuts April 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CMT.
Paisley’s “Sharp Dressed Man” is one of 15 tracks on the all-male tribute album. Some are close to the original. Others take liberties with classic tracks. Brooks & Dunn do “Rough Boy” from 1985’s Afterburner.
Alan Jackson draws “Sure Got Cold After the Rain Fell,” from the group’s first charting album and second overall, Rio Grande Mud, released in 1972. Montgomery Gentry choose “Just Got Paid” from the same era.
Hank Williams Jr. and Hank Williams III each contribute a track. Hank Jr. does the “Jesus Just Left Chicago/Waitin’ for the Bus” medley from 1973’s Tres Hombres, while Hank III chooses “Fearless Boogie” from XXX, a 1999 release.
“Each cut on this album is a personalized display of homage to ZZ Top,” says Joe Galante, chairman of the RCA Label Group-Nashville.
Seven of the group’s albums have gone platinum. Eliminator, released in 1983, received the Recording Industry Association of America’s diamond award for shipment of 10 million copies. Four songs on the tribute album come from Eliminator: “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs” (performed by Trace Adkins ), “Gimme All Your Lovin’” (Lonestar ) and “I Need You Tonight” (Andy Griggs ).
ZZ Top was formed in Houston in 1969 as a blues-rock power trio. They reached their commercial peak in the ‘80s, when a new audience discovered them via their groundbreaking videos on MTV.
