Second 'Songcatcher' Set Features Folk Artists

Songcatcher II: The Tradition That Inspired the Movie, a 17-track compilation of recordings from the Vanguard vault, comes out May 7. The set features performances of folk ballads and fiddle tunes by traditional artists such as Dock Boggs, Hobart Smith, Clarence Ashley, Maybelle Carter and Doc Watson. Boggs sings a stark version of “Oh Death,” Ashley does “House Carpenter” and Fiddlin’ Arthur Smith plays “Leather Britches.” Several come from recordings made at the Newport Folk Festival. The original Songcatcher soundtrack featured contemporary artists performing modern versions of folk ballads. 04/15/02
