Chesney’s Celebrity-Packed Fourth

Kenny Chesney surprised fans at his Atlanta show on Wednesday (July 3) with an unlikely guitarist — NFL star Peyton Manning. Chesney says, “Just like I wanted to be a football player, you can’t believe how many really great athletes want to be rock stars. So before summer training started, I told Peyton he oughta come out on the road for a few days — and he did!” The following night, Chesney got a shout-out from Joe Walsh at the Eagles’ Knoxville concert, which Chesney attended with his mother. During his Friday night (July 5) show in Detroit, Kid Rock helped Chesney perform Van Halen’s, “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” and the Georgia Satellites’ “Keep Your Hands to Yourself.” After the Detroit show, Chesney retreated to Kid Rock’s home studio and recorded three versions of “Back to the Basics of Love (Luckenbach, Texas),” reportedly for a Waylon Jennings tribute album. 07/08/02
