Steve Earle Inspired by American Taliban

Steve Earle’s upcoming album, Jerusalem, features a sympathetic ballad about John Walker Lindh, commonly known as the American Taliban. Earle wrote the song from Lindh’s perspective, with lines like “If I should die, I’ll rise up to the sky like Jesus.” Walker was arrested in November 2001 for fighting on the side of Afghanistan fundamentalist Muslim rulers. Titled “John Walker’s Blues,” Earle performed the song at the Mariposa Folk Festival in Ontario earlier this month. “This song just may get me … deported,” he told the audience. 07/22/02
