Carpenter Lends Her Name to Causes

Mary Chapin Carpenter has been named honorary chairwoman for Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build project in Charlottesville, Va. Their goal is for women to build more than 100 houses nationwide for women and children. She has also been asked to serve on the board of the Eudora Welty Foundation. Welty is one of Carpenter’s favorite authors. Welty’s memoir One Writer’s Beginnings inspired Carpenter’s song “Halley Came to Jackson,” which was later published as a children’s book. Carpenter will also tour for the fourth consecutive year in the Campaign for a Landmine Free World. The tour also features Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin and Bruce Cockburn. 10/10/02
