Howie Epstein Dies in New Mexico

Former Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers bassist Howie Epstein, 47, died Sunday (Feb. 23) in Santa Fe, N.M., of a suspected drug overdose. Epstein’s recording credits include sessions with John Fogerty, Linda Ronstadt and Bob Dylan. He also produced albums for former girlfriend Carlene Carter and John Prine. In June 2001, Epstein and Carter were arrested in Albuquerque after police stopped them in an SUV that had been reported stolen. Officers confiscated 2.9 grams of black-tar heroin and drug paraphernalia from the vehicle. Epstein was not charged in that case, but Carter pleaded guilty to a heroin possession charge and was sentenced to 18 months probation. Carter, the daughter of June Carter Cash, now resides in the Nashville area. 02/25/03
