George Jones Receives Arts Medal

George Jones is scheduled to receive the National Medal of Arts during a Thursday afternoon (March 6) ceremony in the Oval Office of the White House. President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush will honor nine Americans “for the singular distinction of their artistic careers.” This year’s honorees include Motown great William “Smokey” Robinson Jr. and the late Al Hirschfeld (an artist best known for his celebrity caricatures in the New York Times and the New Yorker magazine). Previous National Medal of Arts recipients include Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Minnie Pearl, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson. 03/06/03
