Edward Gaylord Dies at 83

Gaylord Entertainment chairman emeritus Edward L. Gaylord, 83, died Sunday (April 27) in Oklahoma City from complications of cancer. Gaylord served as editor and publisher of The Oklahoman newspaper since 1974, but he made country music history in 1983 when Gaylord Broadcasting spent $240 million to purchase the Opryland properties, a package that included the Grand Ole Opry, WSM-AM & FM, The Nashville Network, CMT, Opryland Music Group, the Opryland theme park and the Opryland Hotel. Gaylord sold TNN and CMT to CBS in 1997. Gaylord Entertainment’s current holdings include the Opry, WSM-AM, the Ryman Auditorium and the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (April 30) in Oklahoma City. 04/28/03
