June Carter Cash in Critical Condition

June Carter Cash remained in critical condition Monday (May 12) at Nashville’s Baptist Hospital as a result of complications from heart surgery last week. The 73-year-old singer-songwriter underwent surgery on May 7 to replace a heart valve. From the ‘40s through the ‘70s, she and older sisters Helen and Anita Carter toured with their mother, Country Music Hall of Fame member Maybelle Carter, as the Carter Family. June Carter married Johnny Cash in 1968 after she co-wrote one of Cash’s biggest hits, “Ring of Fire,” in 1963. The couple released a series of popular duets, including “Jackson” and “If I Were a Carpenter.” Carlene Carter is her daughter from a previous marriage to country singer Carl Smith. Johnny Cash, who has experienced a variety of medical problems in recent years, was released from Baptist Hospital on April 1 following a three-week stay for pneumonia. 05/12/03
