When it comes to the fan-voted list of the 100 Greatest Songs of Country Music, fans of Garth Brooks will be glad to know the way it all would end and the way it all would go.
That’s because “The Dance” garnered more than 7000 votes — the most of any song — on the CMT.com page where fans cast votes for their favorite tunes. Voters were able to choose from the same list featured in the CMT special 100 Greatest Songs of Country Music. More than 27,000 online votes were cast.
Another Brooks song, “Friends in Low Places,” arrives at No. 6 on both the fan poll and the CMT countdown, which tallied opinions from experts and country music professionals. “The Dance” arrived at No. 14 on the CMT special.
“Stand by Your Man,” which was No. 1 on the CMT special, came in at No. 23 on the fan poll. George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” remained a favorite on both panels — No. 2 on the CMT special and No. 3 on the fan-voted poll.
Songs from Charlie Daniels, Lee Greenwood, Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, Martina McBride and Lee Ann Womack all made the Top 10 on the fan-voted poll. Notably absent: Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette and the duo of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson
The biggest switcheroo involves classics from Glen Campbell and Lonestar. On the CMT special, Campbell’s “Galveston” peaked at No. 8 but hovers toward the bottom of the fan-voted poll at No. 96. Meanwhile, Lonestar’s “Amazed” climbed to No. 11 on the fan-voted poll but bottomed out at No. 97 on the CMT special.
The complete six-hour special will re-air June 27 on CMT.
