Cash Makes Concert Appearance

Johnny Cash made a surprise appearance Saturday (June 21) at the Carter Fold, a rustic concert venue at the Carter Family Memorial Music Center near Hiltons, Va. It was his first public appearance since the May 15 death of his wife, singer-songwriter June Carter Cash. Co-founded by Janette Carter, daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter, the center preserves traditional acoustic music. The Kingsport (Tenn.) Times-News reported that Cash was accompanied by his son and daughter-in-law, John Carter Cash and Laura Cash, as he performed several songs, including "Folsom Prison Blues," "Sunday Morning Coming Down," "Ring of Fire," "I Walk the Line" and "The Far Side Banks of Jordan." Cash and his wife last performed at the venue in June 2002. At the end of the show, Cash told the crowd, “It's been a pleasure. It's been a painful experience ... but a healing thing to come back here to this wonderful place with you. [June] loved this valley and all these people and all you people. I wish I could share it more -- how we felt about each other." 06/23/03
