Carter Family Sister Will Be Missed

The oldest and often hailed as the premier torch bearer of the legendary Carter Family sisters, Helen Carter Jones died Tuesday, June 2nd, at the age of 70 after suffering an extended illness. Mrs. Jones passed away at Nashville, Tennessee’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The legendary songstress, who followed the footsteps of the original Carter Family, comprised of her mother Maybelle, cousin Sara and Sara’s husband A.P., made her own singing debut at the age of 10 with sisters Anita and June on a Bristol, Tennessee radio station program. Following the disbandment of the original Carter Family, Maybelle and her daughters formed Mother Maybelle & The Carter Sisters and moved to Richmond, Virginia to become stars on the famous Old Dominion Barn Dance. The group went on to join the Grand Ole Opry cast, turn out a series of country hits and later join the traveling Johnny Cash Show. The wife of pilot Glenn Jones and a devoted mother, Helen also launched a solo career and had become a successful songwriter. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her son, Kenny, and is survived by her husband, sons Kevin, Danny and David, five grandchildren and two sisters.
