Country-Roots Artists Pay Tribute to Blues Legend

Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch and Dave Alvin will appear on an upcoming tribute album to late blues legend Mississippi John Hurt. Produced by Peter Case, the album also features John Hiatt, Beck, Victoria Williams, Taj Mahal, Ben Harper, Chris Smither, Mark Selby, Geoff Muldar, Bill Morrissey and Alvin Youngblood Hart. Lucinda Williams covers “Angels Laid Him Away”; Beck takes on “Stagolee”; and Victoria Williams interprets “Since I Laid My Burden Down.” Proceeds from album sales will benefit the Delta Blues Museum’s Arts and Education Program. Avalon Blues: A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt is slated for release June 12 on Vanguard Records. Hurt recorded three albums for Vanguard from 1963 until his death in 1966.
