Mountain Music at the Heart of All-Female 'Songcatcher' Soundtrack

On the heels of the Appalachian-steeped O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack -- Billboard's current No. 1 country album -- comes the CD release of music from the independent film Songcatcher. The movie is the tale of a female music scholar who retreats deep into Appalachia and discovers the roots of traditional American music. The soundtrack includes original compositions by Dolly Parton, Patty Loveless and Julie Miller. Allison Moorer, Sara Evans, Rosanne Cash, Maria McKee, Deana Carter, Iris DeMent and Hazel Dickens cover traditional folk ballads. Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris, who appear on O Brother, also are featured on the all-female Songcatcher soundtrack. Vanguard Records releases the album May 8.
