Fleck Goes Classical

Banjo innovator Béla Fleck is working in his home studio on a classical release, his first solo outing for Sony Classical, Billboard reports. Without his touring band, the Flecktones, Fleck is recording interpretations of favorite classical pieces. As yet untitled, the project could be released this year, a spokesperson says. Fleck and fellow banjo player Alison Brown share a Grammy nomination for Best Country Instrumental Performance, for “Leaving Cottondale,” a track from Brown’s album, Fair Weather. Outbound, the first album by Fleck and the Flecktones for Sony’s Columbia label, has two Grammy nominations, for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Best Pop Instrumental Performance, for the track “Zona Mona.”
