Wells and Wright Play Farewell Concert

Country Music Hall of Fame member Kitty Wells and her husband/singing partner of 53 years, songwriter Johnny Wright, will perform their final show together on Sunday, Dec. 31, at the Nashville Nightlife Theater. Wells, 81, and Wright, 86, announced their retirement earlier this year; the pair were married in 1937 and have been performing and touring together since then. Radio station 650 WSM-AM will broadcast the live New Year's Eve show from 7-10 p.m. CST, with streaming audio available on their Web site. In 1952, Wells' single on Decca Records, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," was the first No. 1 country song by a female singer. The song, banned by many radio stations, paved the way for future generations of women in country such as Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton, and Wells became known as the Queen of Country Music.
