Bluegrass Promoter Loses Daughter

Amanda (Mandy) Atkins, 21, daughter of bluegrass promoter Darrel Atkins, died Saturday (Nov. 25) of an inoperable brain stem tumor at her home in Galena, Ohio. Her father, promoter of the Hoover-Y Bluegrass Classic in Columbus, Ohio, gave all proceeds from this year's festival to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., in honor of his ailing daughter, who was a long-time patient there. Alison Krauss and Union Station, Bela Fleck, Iris DeMent and the Osborne Brothers were some of the featured acts who played the benefit, which will become an annual event. A non-profit organization, "Musicians Against Childhood Cancer," has been established to channel funds to St. Jude. Funeral services for Atkins will be at 1:30 p.m. ET Thursday (Nov. 30) at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury, Ohio.
