Country Artists Among Stars Top 100

Naming “The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time” is quite an endeavor, but Mojo magazine took on the tricky task and published the results in its October issue. Going right to the source, the London-based pop publication polled a wide range of vocal stars –175 in all, from Shania Twain to Tony Bennett to Alice Cooper–to come up with an interesting list. Several country-related artists made the cut, of course, including K.D. Lang (#100), Merle Haggard (#85), Lefty Frizzell (#82), Glen Campbell (#75), Everly Brothers (#28), Patsy Cline (#25), Roy Orbison (#20), George Jones (#18), Hank Williams (#16) and Elvis Presley (#7). Country runner-ups include Charlie Rich, Dolly Parton, Lucinda Williams, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. The Mojo staff admits some deserving souls were just plain robbed, including Johnny Cash and Alison Krauss. So, who edged out Billie Holiday (#5), John Lennon (#4), Ray Charles (#3) and Frank Sinatra (#2) to capture the top spot? “The Queen of Soul” herself, Aretha Franklin.
