Helen Cornelius made a surprise appearance on the Friday night Opry. She joined former duet partner, Jim Ed Brown, to sing their No. 1 hit from 1976, “I Don’t Want to Have to Marry You.” In 1977, she and Brown were the Country Music Association’s vocal duo of the year. . . . Presenting Joe Diffie on the Saturday night Grand Ole Opry, Johnny Russell said, “I used to like this old boy until he stole my bass player. Now I love him.”. . . So what is it about bass players? Introducing his to the Friday night Opry crowd, comic Mike Snider observed, “He’s from Buffalo. The rest of us had normal parents.”
