MerleFest Lineup Set

Country Music Hall of Fame members Dolly Parton and Earl Scruggs are among the hundreds of bluegrass, folk and country musicians set to perform at the 14th annual MerleFest, the flagship Americana music festival in the United States. The festival takes place April 26-29 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in mountainous Wilkesboro, N.C. This past spring the four-day festival drew a crowd estimated at 62,000. The festival originated as a tribute to acoustic guitar icon Doc Watson's son, Merle Watson, who died in 1985. As in past years, Doc Watson and his grandson, Richard Watson, will headline the event. Also slated to appear are Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Del McCoury Band, Chris Hillman, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Peter Rown, Tony Rice, Tim O'Brien, Nickel Creek, Rhonda Vincent, Dan Tyminski, Herb Pedersen, Jim Lauderdale, Lonesome River Band, John McEuen, Nashville Bluegrass Band, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Beth Nielsen Chapman and the Seldom Scene, among others. Banjo master Scruggs will perform with Gary Scruggs (his son), Marty Stuart, Glen Duncan, Jerry Douglas and Brad Davis. Tickets for the nonprofit festival, which benefits Wilkes Community College, will be available Nov. 14 at the festival website, www.merlefest.org.
