Shania Twain was named performer of the year and Tim McGraw’s A Place in the Sun was honored as best album in Radio & Records annual readers poll. Results were released in the March 3 issue of the radio and music industry trade publication. The magazine polled around 1,000 representatives from radio stations monitored for airplay.

Other winners: McGraw for male vocalist; Martina McBride for female vocalist; Dixie Chicks for group; Montgomery Gentry for vocal duo; “Amazed” for best single; and Brad Paisley for new artist. The victory by Montgomery Gentry ended a seven-year run by Brooks & Dunn in the vocal duo field.

“To be considered in the same company with them, heck, to be anywhere close to where they’ve been is a huge honor for us,” Eddie Montgomery said in a prepared statement issued by his record label. “We work hard and try to make music that kicks. If it hits people, especially the folks at radio, then we know we’re doing what we set out to do.”
