Haggard Joins Plaintiffs in Medical Lawsuit

Merle Haggard is among 366 former patients and their survivors listed as plaintiffs in a lawsuit filed against a Redding, Calif., hospital and eight heart specialists. The Redding Record Searchlight newspaper reports that the physicians, Redding Medical Center and its parent company, Tenet Healthcare Corp., are accused of performing unnecessary heart procedures including heart catheterization, stent implants and bypass surgery. The suit alleges the doctors performed the procedures for financial gain and that the doctors conspired with Tenet to increase profits. Haggard previously told the Los Angeles Times he was suspicious when a doctor at the hospital convinced him to have emergency surgery in 1997 to have a pair of stents placed in his heart. 08/19/03
