Original Flatlander Dies

Sylvester Rice, an original member of the Flatlanders (with Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock) died Tuesday (Oct. 21) in Lubbock, Texas. He was 73. Rice brought the Flatlanders to record in Nashville for the first time in the 1960s and played acoustic bass on their 1972 debut album, an underground favorite. However, he did not take part in the group’s 2002 reunion album Now Again. 10/24/03
