Cash Auction Raises Almost $4 Million

The three-day auction of memorabilia from the estate of Johnny and June Carter Cash raised $3,984,260 for the Cash family. Experts at the auction house, Sotheby’s in New York City, had estimated the sale to total only $1.5 million. When the bidding was over, a 1986 Grammy trophy for best spoken word or non-musical recording remained the most expensive single item of all, selling for $160,000 — or $187,200 including Sotheby’s commission.
