Scalloped Potatoes

This is delicious. However, my grandchildren love mashed potatoes so much that I find myself making those rather than this fine and easy dish.

4 or 5 large potatoes
1 medium onion
1 stick butter
2 1/2 cups evaporated milk
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Preheat over to 350°. Melt butter in 9 x 13 baking dish. Peel and wash potatoes, slice them thin and place in melted butter in baking dish. Cover with peeled and sliced thin onions. Sprinkle salt and pepper. Add milk. Cook for 35 minutes. Add grated cheddar cheese and cook an additional 20 to 25 minutes.
