Founding Member of Jordanaires Dies

Funeral services will be held Saturday (April 9) in Springfield, Mo., for Monty Matthews, a founding member of the Jordanaires vocal group. He died Tuesday (April 5) at age 77. Born Warren Matthews, he and his brother, Bill Matthews, teamed with Culley Holt and Bob Hubbard to form the Jordanaires in 1948 in Springfield. After working in Nashville with Red Foley, the Matthews brothers returned to Missouri in the early '50s. By 1955, the group had settled into its best-known lineup -- Gordon Stoker, Neal Matthews (no relation), Hoyt Hawkins and Ray Walker -- that was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
