Mavis Staples Wins Three W.C. Handy Awards

A year after making a career comeback with her album Have a Little Faith, Mavis Staples won three W.C. Handy Awards on Thursday night (May 5) in Memphis, Tenn. Staples took the trophy for soul blues female artist, and her Have a Little Faith project won in the blues and soul blues album categories. The album’s title track netted a blues song win for songwriters Jim Tullio and Jim Weider. Have a Little Faith includes “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” the first song she learned with her family band, the Staple Singers. … In other news from the Handys, steel guitarist Robert Randolph won in the blues instrumentalist category. He is featured in the video for Sawyer Brown’s “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand.”
