Wilson’s “Skoal Ring” Bothers Tennessee Official

Tennessee Attorney General Paul G. Summers is asking Gretchen Wilson to refrain from pulling a can of tobacco out of her pocket during her live performances of the song, “Skoal Ring.” Claiming Wilson is a role model, Summers says Wilson’s actions onstage potentially influence younger members of the audience. He cites a 1998 agreement prohibiting tobacco companies from targeting young people in their advertising campaigns. However, Wilson does not have an endorsement deal with U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Corp., which manufactures Skoal, or any other tobacco company. According to her publicist, Wilson will not be commenting on Summers’ request. “Skoal Ring” will appear on Wilson’s new album, All Jacked Up, due to be released Sept. 27.
