Daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter Dies Following Lengthy Illness

Janette Carter, the last surviving child of members of the original Carter Family trio, died Sunday (Jan. 22) at a Kingsport, Tenn., hospital following a lengthy illness. The 82-year-old musician was one of three children of founders A.P. and Sara Carter. Maybelle Carter, the other member of the original Carter Family, was married to A.P. Carter’s brother, Ezra. Maybelle and Ezra Carter had three daughters — Helen, Anita and June (Carter Cash) — all now deceased. Janette Carter, who battled Parkinson’s Disease and other chronic ailments, was admitted to the Holston Valley Medical Center after falling and breaking her wrist on Dec. 25. During the ’70s, she was instrumental in establishing the nonprofit Carter Music Center in Hiltons, Va., and hosted concerts each Saturday night at the Carter Fold, the family’s homeplace at the foot of Clinch Mountain. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Scott County Funeral Home in Weber City, Va.
