Billy Joe Shaver Questioned in Texas Shooting

Singer-songwriter Billy Joe Shaver is being questioned by law enforcement authorities following a Saturday night (March 31) shooting at a bar in Lorena, Texas, a suburb of his hometown of Waco. His attorney, Joseph Turner of Austin, Texas, confirmed Monday (April 2) to The Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper that Shaver was involved in the shooting but that he did not know the victim. Turner said witnesses indicated the gunshot victim was intoxicated and had a knife, but the attorney declined additional comment on the singer's involvement in the incident outside Papa Joe's Texas Saloon. Police have not released the name or age of the victim who was reportedly shot in the cheek and treated at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The Texas Rangers are assisting the Lorena Police Department in the investigation. Shaver, whose songwriting credits include "Old Chunk of Coal" and "Old Five and Dimers," is set to release a new CD compilation, Greatest Hits, on Tuesday.
