Richard Weize, founder and owner of German-based Bear Family Records, will receive a lifetime achievement award from Belmont University in Nashville for his work in producing CD reissues. Established in 1975, Bear Family became a leader in reissuing country, rock, jazz and other roots-related music. The company is perhaps best known for its boxed sets of complete recordings by numerous country artists, including Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. Bear Family has also released compilations on relatively obscure artists and reissued individual albums that were out of print in the U.S. Awards chairman Don Cusic noted, “Richard Weize has consistently produced top quality books of liner notes to accompany his boxed sets. These complement the boxed sets and add an important addition to the story of artists and their recordings. He certainly deserves this award for linking books with country music.” The award presentation is scheduled for May 25 during the International Country Music Conference at Belmont.
