Wheeling Jamboree Star Chickie Williams Dies

Funeral services will be held Saturday (Nov. 24) in Wheeling, W.Va., for Chickie Williams, the wife and singing partner of country troubadour Doc Williams. She died Sunday (Nov. 18) in Wheeling at age 88. The Williams were best known for their performances on the WWVA Wheeling Jamboree radio show. Born Jessie Wanda Crupe on Feb. 13, 1919, in Bethany, W.Va., she did not begin singing professionally until after she married Williams in 1939. She had her biggest hit in 1947 with her recording of "Beyond the Sunset," a hymn later made more famous by the Three Suns, Hank Williams and Red Foley. Williams is survived by her husband and three daughters. Her funeral will be held at Wheeling's First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Parkview Memorial Gardens, also in Wheeling.
