A public memorial service for Grammy-nominated folk singer Bruce “Utah” Phillips will be held Sunday morning (June 1) at the Little League baseball park in Nevada City, Calif. Phillips, 73, died Friday (May 23) at his home in Nevada City after battling chronic heart disease since 2004. He became prominent on the national folk scene with the release of his 1973 debut album, Good Though!. The son of labor organizers, he spent most of his life touring and actively supporting social justice issues. Fellow Workers, his 1999 collaboration with singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco, was nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary folk album. A private burial for Phillips is planned for Thursday (May 29).
