Like homemade ice cream, home fried chicken and real mashed potatoes, homemade lemonade is a thing of the past. The iceman would drive the old rickety truck down the dirt road to our house with red dust a-flying. He’d pull up to the door, take a pair of tongs and get a 35 cent block of ice. He delivered twice a week. Mama would hurriedly make the lemonade using any pieces that fell off the truck.
rinds of two lemons
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup lemon juice
4 cups water
Combine first three ingredients and heat to boiling. Boil one minute. (Mama cooked on a woodstove.) Strain and cool. Add fresh lemon juice and water.
Mama knew the time of the ice truck, so we had lemonade twice weekly for dinner — the noon meal. The night meal was supper.
