Hope for Haiti Now Album Debuts at No. 1 on the Chart

Artists Across Music Genres Join Forces for Historic Effort

The album that came out of last week’s Hope for Haiti Now all-star benefit for Haitian earthquake victims has topped the SoundScan and Billboard 200 all-genre album sales chart. It marks the first time an all-digital album has achieved that feat. First-week sales for Hope for Haiti Now topped out at 171,000 for the first week. Sales are available only via download.

The Hope for Haiti Now benefit was held last Friday (Jan. 22) in Los Angeles. With donations continuing to come in from around the world, organizers of the Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief telethon announced Saturday (Jan. 23) that the event had already raised more than $57 million, a new record for donations made by the general public through a disaster relief telethon. The event, organized by MTV Networks, featured a wide array of musical artists and show business figures. It aired on dozens of TV and cable outlets and streamed live on many Web sites.
