He’s an old Tennessean. That’s what Kenny Chesney says in his version of one of Mac McAnally’s greatest songs, “Back Where I Come From.” So off he went to Gibbs High School in Corryton, Tenn., to surprise the Eagles football team there Wednesday night (Aug. 25). Chesney graduated from Gibbs in the ’80s, and while he was there, he played for those Eagles. (You can see him in full uniform in his “The Boys of Fall” video.) “You all grew up just like us,” he told the team in a little locker-room pep talk. “You drive the same roads we drove, you obviously played on the same football field we played on and walked through the same halls, so it’s really a special time for me to come here and play you guys this. About a game we all love.” He was there to give the players a preview of Boys of Fall, his documentary film about high school football premiering Sunday (Aug. 29) on ESPN.
