Singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham, who gained mainstream recognition for his involvement in the Crazy Heart film soundtrack, took home two trophies as the top winner at Thursday night’s (Sept. 9) Americana Honors and Awards ceremony at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Bingham was named the Americana Music Association’s artist of the year, and he and co-writer T Bone Burnett won song of the year honors for “The Weary Kind,” the theme to Crazy Heart. Rosanne Cash’s The List was voted album of the year. Hayes Carll won in the new and emerging artist category, and the Avett Brothers scored a victory in the duo or group division. Buddy Miller, who led the band at the awards ceremony, was again voted instrumentalist of the year. Following the awards show, former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant surprised the crowd with a 40-minute performance with the Band of Joy, his current touring band featuring Miller, Patty Griffin and Darrell Scott.
