OFFSTAGE: Rascal Flatts’ Stylist Creates a Color Theme

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

I just got around to reading the cover story of the Nashville Lifestyles magazine I picked up when I was in Music City for the CMA Awards in November. It’s all about Rascal Flatts and who their heroes are and why they give back to their communities in such a big way. But then there’s a great little sidebar all about their style. Or, I guess I should say styles, because each member of the band seems to have a distinct look. And their stylist, John Murphy, says that’s the objective. “Joe Don tends to like his clothes fitted a little tighter to bring out the rocker, Gary tends to gravitate more toward a country rock vibe and Jay keeps it casual and cool,” Murphy said. “We tie all three together with a general color theme to give the group a cohesiveness.” Then he talks about how the band has a great tailor who alters their clothes but is also responsible for adding embellishments to their stage clothes. So if you are out looking for the pair of rhinestone-studded jeans you saw on Gary LeVox, you may have to find that tailor or embellish them yourself. Country fans, start your Bedazzlers .
