OFFSTAGE: Trisha Yearwood in Good Company on Five Worst Cookbooks List

Thanks, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Thanks a lot. Just when I was about to commit myself to being a better cook, with a little help from Trisha Yearwood and her Home Cooking cookbook, you have to go and name it one of the Five Worst Cookbooks of the Year. Just because states in the Southeast have the highest rates of obesity in the nation, you think all this comfort food makes this book one of the worst? (Trisha's in good company, by the way, considering the others in the PCRM's Top 5 include titles by celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Ina Garten and the creators of TV's Top Chef.) Let me ask you this. Have you tried her Garth's Breakfast Bowl with eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese tortellini, cheddar cheese, tater tots and butter? Yes, it's a lot of fat and cholesterol. But I'd rather eat a tiny portion of food like that than a super-sized portion of something lean, healthy and tasteless. I feel the same way about Yearwood's grandmother's strawberry cake or her jalapeño hushpuppies. "Everything in moderation" is a much more realistic New Year's resolution than "toss all the great cookbooks," I think.
