OFFSTAGE: The Accordion Not Hip to The Band Perry’s Heart

(CMT Offstage keeps a 24/7 watch on everything that’s happening with country music artists behind the scenes and out of the spotlight.)

Neil Perry, one third of the sibling trio The Band Perry, plays an accordion in the group’s video for “If I Die Young.” And lead singer and big sister Kimberly likes to tease him about it. “It is a cool instrument. Scores him zero dates,” she told CMT Radio. “His first job in the band was as the drummer, so I’m not sure if that was an elevation.” Neil agrees the squeezebox might have been a step in the wrong direction. “I went from one spectrum of coolness down to the lowest level,” he said. But Neil also plays the mandolin and sings background vocals — in the video and in real life. So while he may not be as quite as hip as his bassist brother Reid, things may be looking up because “If I Die Young” is nominated for a Grammy for best country song of the year. And if the song, written by Kimberly, wins, that will probably help score him all kinds of dates, accordion or not.
