This column will be short and hopefully sweet. Been to North Carolina for the new year. The home folks are all fine. We still miss mama but so thankful she lived to be 92.
Speaking of age, mama’s cousin, Betty passed away recently. Her nephew gave a wonderful eulogy, but he told me that Betty’s daughter would not allow him to talk about her mom’s snuff dipping. “What I wanted to say,” he drawled, “was if Aunt Betty hadn’t dipped snuff, she’d have lived to be 130. She was 99.”
You can’t convince tobacco farmers that tobacco is a killer.
George Jones: It Was Too Cold to Drive Home
Wednesday (Jan. 5), Hall of Famer George Jones went to the hospital for his annual checkup. As all you seniors know, this sounds like nothing, but it is the doctors’ time to push, jab, pinch and stick — while chuckling under their breath. Apparently when the all-day event ended, why the Possum was so worn out, he told all in the sound of his voice, including his wife, “I’m spending the night here. It’s too cold to go outdoors. Nancy, you can come and get me in the morning.” And that was that. Stay well, George.
Keep in mind, this is the man who drove a lawn mower down Franklin Road to the nearest liquor store in his rowdier days. And he drank it all!!
Taylor Is No Longer a Gyllenhaalic
Rumor has it the Taylor Swift/Jake Gyllenhaal hot romance has sizzled and ceased and they tell me Jake the snake called it off. Well, all I’ve got to say is Taylor is only 21 and does not need a man who has stripped off naked in a movie for all the women in the world, include her mama and me, to see! Keep moving, Taylor. There’s more pretty men that don’t display their privates to the world. A man like him (Jake) has got a million women chasing after him. Find a young billionaire with only 50 women chasing.
When Taylor presented my favorite actor Johnny Depp with the favorite movie actor award on the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday (Jan. 5), he said to her, “My daughter said if I didn’t say hi to you for her, I’d be in big trouble.” Friends and neighbors, read what Depp said to Taylor. Every young girl from 8 to 18 loves Taylor, and since she’s reached 21, I’d wager she will compose songs to fit that age group as well. Taylor is sharp as a whip.
When Sir Elton John presented Taylor with the big country award that same night, he remarked, “When I was young, the upbeat twang of guitars and honky-tonk pianos rang out across the world and still ring out today with lovelorn melodies and rebellious songsters loud and clear proving you don’t need pickup trucks or even a pair of boots to love country music. You just love it!” Boy, that Elton John is one smart Englishman.
Did You Know??
Did you know that Willie Nelson‘s Farm Aid pal, John Mellencamp, who filed for divorce from his wife a few weeks past, was seen in a New York City grocery shopping and holding hands with actress Meg Ryan?
Did you know that both Shania Twain and Kellie Pickler tied the knot New Year’s Day? Given in marriage by her 9-year-old son Eja, Shania married Frederic Thiebaud in Puerto Rico. Kellie married songwriter Kyle Jacobs on a private island in the Caribbean. Pray tell, what is wrong with getting married in America? Or do they get married and start honeymooning right off the bat?
The Nashville Film Festival is set to host its second annual La Fete du Cinema fund raising dinner Feb. 14. Special agents for the ‘all things James Bond’ event are Brad Paisley and Kimberly Paisley. They will be joined by their friends and skating legend Scott Hamilton and his wife Stacie.
The totally wonderful Ashton Shepherd managed a hot shot debut with a new single titled “Look It Up,” which I have yet to hear. The girl from south Alabama has choice words for her cheatin,’ drinkin,’ lyin’ man and she sings about him — using phrases that remind me of Loretta Lynn. She sings, “The word is faithful-look it up/ It don’t mean sneaking around behind my back like you ain’t getting enough/How ’bout forever-just look it up/It means through thick and thin, and pitchin’ in, even when the times get tough.”
I’ve been getting e-mails and phone calls and it’s all because the wonderful Tom Roland and Wade Jessen at Billboard mag printed a color photo of Joanna Smith and yours truly in Billboard. Thanks to my makeup man, Michael McCall, my complexion and hair look as well as they do for CMT’s Southern Fried Flicks. Keep your TV tuned to CMT!!
